It was a sentimental moment, since it played such a role in the soundtrack of our lives. He developed the first solid-state compact record player, and many other items targeted to the typical audio consumer - and other than such as the Model 9 speaker and Advent 1000 TV, eschewed esoterica.Note: A while back I wrote about replacing an audio receiver after many years ( The STR-AV1010 Is Dead ). With KLH, he was instrumental in developing Dolby B, and was the first to incorporate it into a consumer reel-to-reel deck (and later into the 201 cassette deck with Advent).

HK remained brilliant his entire life, but bent his talents towards many different aspects of the industry rather than sticking only to speakers. And by then, he was the first to admit that his limited hearing took him out of the design business completely. His input was in the ideas and niches that he felt were under served in the industry - a GOOD, STYLISH radio, for instance, or decent small speakers. But the Advent 300 receiver was milestone and a remains a benchmark that few inexpensive receivers have ever bettered, as well as having one of the best phono sections ever installed in a receiver until that point - and seldom bettered since.ĬSW and Tivoli thereafter were more-or-less marketing companies using tried-and-true designs mass-produced at the lowest possible costs but to at least minimal quality standards such that HK would allow his name to be associated with them. But concentrated, again, on electronics with the A201 cassette deck and the Advent 1000 Television - the best-of-the-best projection unit with lots of teething problems. Advent made a few speakers, Large, Large Walnut, Small and Self-Powered Large. Thence to Advent, where his hearing loss became more troublesome and more extensive. Those exceptions were to be the best-of-the-best, the Model 9 speaker being an example of that sort of thinking. His goal was making good-quality lowest-possible cost stuff and staying away from the high end of the market - with exceptions. Henry Kloss continued the tradition when he left AR with Hofmann and Low, but as he was just beginning starting to lose his hearing by then (high end, then acuity), he concentrated on electronics with the much-loved radios and some receivers and suitcase-style all-in one units.

AR continued that mix of drivers through the AR18 series before switching to very nearly only dome tweeters thereafter. It is not uncommon to see them going at $200 or more per pair in working condition. In its day, it was a $50 speaker including substantial weight and an oiled-walnut cabinet, included a tweeter level control on the crossover and remains highly prized (and priced) to this day. The CSW 6 basic 8 x 1-3/4 two-way design began life as the AR4x - a speaker that had excellent bass for an 8" woofer and pretty good dispersion for a cone tweeter.

What are your thought and input on this speaker? Did I buy a name made in China or did I get a serious bargain for a new speaker? They sound ok to me for what I use them for and being in an apartment I can not turn them up loud or rock out or anything so they seem ok, but I do wish they had more bottom end. What I want to know is: Are these speakers a modern day version of some of his famous speakers of the past or did I simply buy a name? These speakers are made in China.

I picked the Model Six speakers because they did not cost that much and had the Henry Kloss named tied to them. A few months a go I bought a new budget 2 channel system for our apartment.
